Two Nigeria-eligible youngsters score for Chelsea youth team coached by Arsenal Invincible
Published: October 29, 2021Two Nigeria-eligible youngsters Derrick Abu and Tudor Mendel-Idowu got their names on the scoresheet as Chelsea recovered from being three goals down to draw 3-3 with Reading in an U17 Premier League Cup match this week.
The Chelsea U17s was coached by a key member of the Arsenal Invincibles team of the 2003-2004 season, Ashley Cole.
According to Chelsea's official website, Cole opted to give minutes to Abu and Mendel-Idowu in order for the duo to get match fitness.
The 2005-born forward Mendel-Idowu is a first-year scholar at Chelsea and 2003-born defender Abu signed his first professional contract earlier this year.
The duo have not played much for the U18s in the new season with the striker logging only thirteen minutes in the U18 Premier League and the fullback playing just three matches.
Mendel-Idowu has been invited to train with England's U15s in the past and Abu, who is also eligible for Germany, has featured in non-binding games for the Young Lions at U17 level.
Chelsea will meet the same opponents Reading in the U18 Premier League on Saturday morning.
