'Getting there step by step' - Super Eagles striker Awoniyi speaks on preparations for AFCON
Nigeria's preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations are in full swing with the national team under the guidance of caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen fine-tuning their strategies at their training camp in Abuja.

Twelve players were in camp as at Sunday morning following the arrival of Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi.

With the withdrawals of Victor Osimhen and Emmanuel Dennis, and the unavailability of Racing Genk goal machine Paul Onuachu, Union Berlin star Taiwo Awoniyi is expected to play a more prominent role during the tournament in Cameroon.

"We are getting ready for the AFCON, to do everything for the country and like you said we just finished another training session, getting there step by step, and when the time comes we'll deliver for the country," Awoniyi said to NFF TV.

1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning right-back Eguavoen is getting the players into shape for the task ahead with two training sessions each day.

On the physical training under Eguavoen, Awoniyi said : "It has been a great session, two times a day, since we resumed the camp, it has been a nice training session with different drills getting us into the rhythm and getting prepared for the games".

Awoniyi previously represented Nigeria at the U20 and U23 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring in both tournaments and will be aiming to open his Super Eagles account at AFCON 2021.
