Former Nigeria Head Coach Surprisingly Linked with Ghana’s Black Stars Coach Position

The four-time champions were eliminated from the AFCON competition at the bottom of their group which featured Comoros, Gabon, and Morocco. The Black Stars failed to win any games in the group matches for the time in the competition’s history, which was quite disappointing for their fans. According to sources close to the coach, Gernot is open for the job as Ghana’s head coach if given the chance. Ghana's football team has shown great potential in the past despite their shortcoming at the 2021 African Cup of Nations and Gernot’s experience with African football will allow him to take the team to the right place.

The 68-year-old is known for assembling a youthful Nigerian squad and convincing players like Joe Aribo, Ola Aina, Maduka Okoye, and others to switch their allegiance to the Super Eagles. Besides Nigeria, Rohr has also worked with Niger and Burkina Faso, giving him a lot of experience working with West African Teams.

With Ghana expected to face Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup Playoffs, the 68-year-old is hoping to have the chance to force the bitter pill down the Super Eagles' throats as a payback for his dismissal. In 2017, the 44-year-old served as the assistant coach for the Black Stars, working under coach James Kwesi Appiah before he became the Black Meteors (Ghana’s National U-23) head coach in November 2018. He was also appointed as the Black Stars in January 2020, but Annor Walker took over the role only 5 months after his appointment.
