Former Nigeria Head Coach Surprisingly Linked with Ghana’s Black Stars Coach Position
Published: February 06, 2022Former Nigeria’s head coach Gernot Rohr has popped up as a surprise candidate in the race for Ghana’s Black Stars coach position after Milovan Rajevac’s dismissal from the position. The Ghana Football Association announced Rajevac’s dismissal on Wednesday last week, in the wake of their disastrous campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations competition hosted in Cameroon.
The four-time champions were eliminated from the AFCON competition at the bottom of their group which featured Comoros, Gabon, and Morocco. The Black Stars failed to win any games in the group matches for the time in the competition’s history, which was quite disappointing for their fans. That led to their exit from the competition, but fans have continued wagering on the tournament with the Betway Naija sports bookie.
Following Rajevac’s exit, the Ghana Football Association is currently looking for4 his replacement, with the former Super Eagles coach being among the candidates. Gernot Rohr was the Super Eagles coach until last year 12th December and he believes that he has what it take to turn the wheel for the Black Stars.
Despite achieving the targets to qualify for the World Cup Playoffs and the African Cup of Nations, Rohr was strangely dismissed a few weeks before the kickoff of the Cameroon tournament. The 68-year-old Franco-German was on a five-year spell with the Super Eagles, guiding the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and his men took third place during the 2019 AFCON competition in Egypt.
According to sources close to the coach, Gernot is open for the job as Ghana’s head coach if given the chance. Ghana's football team has shown great potential in the past despite their shortcoming at the 2021 African Cup of Nations and Gernot’s experience with African football will allow him to take the team to the right place.
The 68-year-old is known for assembling a youthful Nigerian squad and convincing players like Joe Aribo, Ola Aina, Maduka Okoye, and others to switch their allegiance to the Super Eagles. Besides Nigeria, Rohr has also worked with Niger and Burkina Faso, giving him a lot of experience working with West African Teams.
With Ghana expected to face Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup Playoffs, the 68-year-old is hoping to have the chance to force the bitter pill down the Super Eagles' throats as a payback for his dismissal. The game’s odds will be available on Betway and Gernot hops he’ll have the chance to guide the Black Stars to the 2022 World Cup competition as he did with Nigeria in 2018.
Ghana has several star players in their squad, including Thomas Partey, Andre Ayew, Daniel Amartey and others who are hungry to grace the FIFA World Cup Stage and Gernot can make their dream a reality. However, former Ghanaian midfielder Otto Addo and retired Borrusia Dortmund star Ibrahim Tanko have been linked with this position.
Tanko is a 44-year-old retired Ghanaian footballer who won the UEFA Champions League when playing for Borussia Dortmund in 1997. In 2017, the 44-year-old served as the assistant coach for the Black Stars, working under coach James Kwesi Appiah before he became the Black Meteors (Ghana’s National U-23) head coach in November 2018. He was also appointed as the Black Stars in January 2020, but Annor Walker took over the role only 5 months after his appointment.
