Napoli striker Osimhen one goal away from setting new Nigerian record in Serie A
Published: March 18, 2022Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is one goal away from setting a new Nigerian record in the Italian Serie A.
According to Napolicalciolive.com, Osimhen will become the first Nigeria footballer to hit double figures for goals in two different seasons in the Serie A with his next goal in the Italian top-flight.
Former Super Eagles strikers Obafemi Martins, Stephen Makinwa and Victor Obinna, and Salernitana loanee Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo all missed out on the record.
Inter Milan icon Martins came close to being the first Nigerian player to score double digits in the Serie A in two different seasons, finishing the 2004-2005 campaign with eleven goals and notching nine the following season.
With nine matches to the end of the 2021-2022 season, it is almost a foregone conclusion that Osimhen will become the first Nigerian player to finish with at least ten goals in two different seasons.
In his debut season in the Serie A, the 2015 U17 World Cup Golden Boot winner tallied ten goals and has gotten his name on the scoresheet nine times this term.
Osimhen will be eyeing the new Nigerian record when Napoli face off with Isaac Success' Udinese at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples on Saturday afternoon.
