UEL : Aribo, Bassey in action; Balogun non-playing sub as Rangers lose to RB Leipzig
Published: April 28, 2022Super Eagles duo of Joseph Aribo and Calvin Bassey were in action for Rangers in Thursday's first leg semifinals clash of the UEFA Europa League against German side RB Leipzig at the RB Arena which the hosts won by 1-0 ahead of the return leg in Glasgow.
Rangers are the first Scottish club to appear in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, making Scotland the 12th country represented at this stage of the competition.
Calvin Bassey who played in central defence made a great block in the 17th minute to deny Christopher Nkunku's shot which was goal-bound.
The third Nigerian at the club Leon Balogun was an unused substitute in the game.
Aribo created a goal scoring chance in the 49th minute when he laid a good pass onto the path of Ryan Kent but his shot went across the face of goal and behind.
Aribo also cushioned a nice header for Kent in the 53rd minute after a nice build-up play but nothing came off the move.
Rangers frustrated their hosts with ball retention and physical approach to the game for large spells of the game.
Leipzig eventually broke the deadlock five minutes to go through left back Angelino who struck the ball beautifully from the edge of the box from a corner kick.
