Taiwo Awoniyi brace fires Union Berlin into Europa League
Published: May 14, 2022Taiwo Awoniyi fired Union Berlin into next season's Europa League as he netted a brace to help the capital outfit seal a hard-fought 3-2 win over Bochum in a German Bundesliga clash staged at Stadion An der Alten Försterei in Berlin on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to today's fixture, Union Berlin already knew they would be competing in Europe next season but their Nigerian star ensured they qualified for the more prestigious Europa League and not the Europa Conference League.
In his final game for Union Berlin, Grischa Prömel gave the home team the lead with a header in the fifth minute.
Awoniyi converted from the spot to double the advantage in the 25th minute after the referee awarded a penalty for a handball by Robert Tesche.
Bochum battled back from behind to level the tie, thanks to efforts from Simon Zoller and Eduard Löwen.
With two minutes left on the clock , Awoniyi netted the game-winning goal as he pounced on a loose ball and slotted a left-footed finish past the goalkeeper.
The Super Eagles striker ended the season with fifteen league goals - a career best for the former Liverpool man.
