Opinion : The likely formation Jose Peseiro may use in first game as Nigeria coach
Published: May 27, 2022After running the rule over the Super Eagles players for the first time on Thursday evening, new manager Jose Peseiro spoke about how happy he was to start work and he also praised the attitude of the players.
This article will take a look at the most likely formation the Portuguese football tactician may adopt in his first game as coach of the three-time African champions against Mexico on Saturday.
According to Transfermarkt, the Portuguese manager favours a 5-4-1 formation which is more or less a defensive set-up.
But it is possible that Jose Peseiro would go for the 4-2-3-1 due to the following reasons.
1) Although, this formation is being phased out gently by top tier managers, it is still one of the most effective set-ups for teams to initiate offensive play whilst maintaining defensive security simultaneously.
2) Passing out from the back is not yet utilised by most international teams. They usually go long which will bypass a high-press effectively.
With two central midfielders in a 4-2-3-1, there will be enough protection in the central areas.
3) Nigeria's greatest pool of current talent lies at full-back, and only the 4-2-3-1 offers them the necessary protection to explore their attacking capabilities to the peak.
