'I don't see that happening' - Ex-Celtic star insists Bassey not in same bracket as Kieran Tierney
Published: May 29, 2022Former Glasgow Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has questioned the price tag for Calvin Bassey amid speculation that Rangers value the Premier League-linked left-back at more than 25 million pounds (N13.11 billion in Nigerian currency).
The Nigeria international is in the plans of manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst for next season but the leadership of the Light Blues would be forced into a sale if they receive a record bid.
The Scottish transfer record for outbound transfers belongs to Kieran Tierney who switched to Arsenal from Celtic in exchange for £25million in the summer of 2019 at the age of 22.
As a Celtic player, Tierney won four Scottish Premiership titles, was a two-time Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup winner each, and had played twelve times for Scotland.
On the other hand, three-cap Nigeria national teamer Bassey has been a Scottish Premiership winner once and won his only Scottish Cup in the recently concluded season.
McAvennie has argued that Bassey is not in the same bracket as Tierney, considering that the left-back won several titles at Celtic, and does not think interested clubs would pay that much for the Nigerian.
"Players are worth what people will pay for them. The club can put these figures on them, good for them, no one is going to pay it," he told Football Insider .
"I just don’t see how you can compare Bassey and Tierney. Tierney had all these awards and loads of trophies when he went to Arsenal.
"What does Bassey have? He hasn’t played as well or achieved as much as Tierney did but Rangers want the same money?
"Not for me, I don’t see that happening."
Aston Villa are among the Premier League clubs credited with an interest in signing Bassey who is currently on international duty with the Super Eagles in the United States.
