Osimhen's injury relapse against Liverpool : Napoli provide update on Super Eagles star
Published: September 08, 2022Victor Osimhen suffered a relapse of a muscle-related injury during the first half of Napoli's 4-1 rout of Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Nigeria international had been rated as doubtful for the visit of Jurgen Klopp's team but passed a fitness test in the hours leading up to the game at the Diego Maradona Stadium.
Osimhen was named in the starting lineup but was was unable to carry on after 40 minutes due to discomfort, making way for Giovanni Simeone.
Prior to his substitution, the number 9 caused problems for the Liverpool backline with his pace and physicality, winning and also missing a spot kick in the 18th minute.
The referee pointed to the spot after replays showed that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk fouled the Nigerian in the area.
Providing a fitness update on the club's record acquisition on Wednesday night, Napoli stated on their official website : "Victor Osimhen, who came out in the 41st minute of Napoli-Liverpool, suffered a muscle strain in his right thigh."
Osimhen will be monitored by the Napoli medical team before a decision is made whether or not he will be named in the squad to face Spezia on Saturday, three days before their trip to Glasgow for a Champions League match against Rangers.
