Why Chelsea are having a bad run in the Premier League - Former African POTY
Published: February 21, 2023Premier League giants Chelsea are going through a poor run of form at the moment and have won just once in the year 2023 thus far, which is down to psychological reasons, according to former African Footballer of the Year, Victor Ikpeba.
The Blues in the past one week had lost 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League and English Premier League to Borussia Dortmund and Southampton respectively.
Onetime Borussia Dortmund superstar and 1997 African Footballer of The Year, Victor Ikpeba bared his thoughts on Chelsea's abysmal run in the English top flight on the latest edition of Monday Night Football.
"Look at how Chelsea have been playing. They create chances. You can't fault their efforts," Ikpeba said on SuperSport.
"Midweek in the UEFA Champions League against Dortmund, they created enough chances and should have beaten Dortmund but they capitulated.
"Great individual goal from Karim Adeyemi, the young forward. He was brilliant.
"Chelsea's form has to do with psychological problems because players go into the pitch expecting to win games, and when they don't, there is no longer belief.
"I'm telling you from experience. I feel Graham Potter was not ready for the Chelsea job." Ikpeba added.
"When you don't win games, when you have those bad runs - Liverpool had it - you can be beaten. Chelsea are going through that bad run.
"To lose to Southampton was shocking. I tipped Chelsea to have maximum points. But that's the beauty of the English Premier League. The unpredictability. That's why we love the EPL.
"The results this weekend will humble a lot of fans.
Potter's men occupy 10th place on the log with 31 points from 23 league games.
They face top-four chasing Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Sunday at 2.30pm Nigerian time.
