2023 AFCONQ : A golden opportunity for Bright Osayi-Samuel to impress Peseiro
Published: March 20, 2023Fenerbahce defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel was one of the eight defenders called up by Jose Peseiro ahead of the Super Eagles double-header against Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Osayi-Samuel made his debut in November 2022 when Nigeria lost 4-0 to Portugal in a friendly match, featuring for 90 minutes in the game as a right-back and was pretty solid, though he gave away a penalty.
The Portuguese tactician must have been impressed with what he saw from Osayi-Samuel in the game against Portugal and that is why he has been recalled.
In the absence of Tyronne Ebuehi and Ola Aina, the 25-year-old is set to start his second game for the Super Eagles and this is another golden opportunity for the former Queens Park Rangers player to impress Peseiro.
With due respect to the Djurtus, this is an opportunity for Osayi-Samuel to make the right back position his considering the level of the opponents.
With his pace and quick feet, he would be needed to break down the Guinea-Bissau defence, combining well with either Ademola Lookman or Samuel Chukwueze on the right wing and finding Victor Osimhen with good crosses.
Equally, he would also be needed to thwart the actions of the Guinea-Bissau attack particularly if Jorginho start from the left wing.
The Ludogorets winger has scored 3 goals already in this qualifying campaign and is one of Guinea-Bissau's most dangerous players.
If Osayi-Samuel can be at his personal best over the two legs, he would be repaying the trust Paseiro has in him and ultimately making the right back position his for the time being.
