Chelsea's Nigeria-eligible midfielder captains England U20s to win over Germany

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka wore the captain's armband as England U20s defeated Germany 2-0 in an international friendly staged at the Manchester City’s Academy Stadium on Wednesday.

By winning the 2022 U19 EURO, England have qualified for this summer's FIFA U20 World Cup and could be a potential opponent for the Flying Eagles in Indonesia.

Against Germany, England U20 boss Ian Forster handed minutes to three other players of Nigerian descent in the shape of Tim Iroegbunam, Sam Edozie and Daniel Oyegoke, with the trio all starting from the bench.

Crystal Palace glovesman Owen Goodman, who snubbed an invitation to train with the Flying Eagles ahead of the U20 AFCON in favour of representing England, was an unused substitute.

This is the second match Chukwuemeka has captained England U20s this season, having also worn the armband on his debut for the age group, against Chile back in September.

England U20s got their week off to a winning start thanks to a brace from Juventus striker Sam Iling-Junior, who was formerly at Chelsea before moving to Turin.

The Young Lions will continue their preparations for the World Cup with another friendly against United States on March 25 and France on March 28 at the Marbella Football Centre in Spain.
