Middlesbrough put contract talks with Championship's hottest striker Akpom on hold
Published: May 06, 2023Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has refused to comment on whether the club has offered star striker, Chuba Akpom a new deal.
Akpom joined Middlesbrough in 2020 on a three-year deal with an option to extend for a further 12 months which the club has activated due to his brilliant form.
The Arsenal Youth product has bagged 28 goals in the Championship this season, making him the top scorer in the league.
Due to his exceptional form this season, he has been awarded the Championship Player of the Year, Middlesbrough's Player and Players' Player of the Year awards.
When quizzed about a potential new deal for Akpom, Carrick was quoted as saying by Teesside Live: "I don't want to get into that at this time of year with any player really.
"We're nearly there, in terms of the season-ending. That isn't much to say that I haven't already said on Chuba.
"I think he's done fantastic, and I think he's found a good place to play how I think you can see that by his smile and how the goals are going in.
"You can see how much he's enjoying himself, which is fantastic to see."
The Hale End Academy product has also been linked with possible moves to the Premier League and Bundesliga, and more clubs could signify their interest in his services in the summer.
With one year left on his contract, Boro will have to decide whether to keep or sell him in the summer if they don't agree on a contract extension with the Anglo-Nigerian forward.
