Ndidi captains Leicester in 2-1 loss to Peterborough United, Iheanacho's free-kick hits the post
Published: July 11, 2023Super Eagles duo Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench at halftime as Leicester City were beaten 2-1 by League One club Peterborough United in a behind-closed-doors friendly at LCFC Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon.
Ndidi and Iheanacho have reported for pre-season training after international duty with the Super Eagles last month and despite speculation linking them with a departure from the King Power Stadium.
In what was Enzo Maresca's first game in charge, the Italian football tactician gave a runout to twenty two players, ensuring that he ran the rule over the players in a match situation.
Kwame Poku broke the deadlock for the visitors early in the first half and Ricardo Pereira restored parity before halftime.
Ndidi was handed the armband for the entirety of the second half, taking over captaincy duties from experienced striker Jamie Vardy who was replaced at halftime.
The Nath Boys product is one of the longest-serving players who is not academy developed in the Leicester City squad, having arrived at the King Power Stadium six and a half years ago from Racing Genk.
Four minutes into the second half, Ndidi had a chance to make it 2-1 but saw his shot saved by Peterborough United's trialist goalkeeper.
With eight minutes to go, Joe Tomlinson netted what proved to be the match-winning goal with a deflected effort.
Iheanacho was unlucky not to grab an equaliser in the closing minutes when his brilliant free-kick hit the inside of the post.
