Ebi on the verge of breaking WWC record: Ex-Nigeria coach Dennerby speaks on Super Falcons captain

Left-footed Abia Angels defender Onome Ebi is on the verge of setting a new record at the Fifa Women's World Cup when the Super Falcons battle Canada in their opener on July 21.

Aged 40 years and 73 days today, Ebi, who is attending her sixth World Cup, will become the oldest player to captain a team at the Women's Wold Cup if she's named in the starting lineup by manager Randy Waldrum, breaking the record set by France midfielder Sandrine Soubeyrand (37 years and 334 days) against Sweden in 2011.

The defender has attended every Women's World Cup since making her debut in the tournament twenty years ago in the United States.

When put on the spot, former Super Falcons coach and Swedish football tactician, Thomas Dennerby suggested that Ebi was taken to the 2023 World Cup because Waldrum thinks she's good enough to make the team despite her age.

Asked if she can bring anything to the Nigeria squad, Dennerby told Nigeria Info FM Abuja's Bunmi Blair: "Probably. As long as her head coach thinks she is good enough, she can play, but I've never seen them playing for more than three years now so it's really, really odd for me to give a proper assessment of any of the players.

"I have seen a few of them playing in Europe of course but I don't know so much about them to give you a good answer.

"If the head coach thinks you are good enough, you are probably good enough because he has the full overview that I don't have."

Super Falcons legend Nkiru Okosieme holds the absolute record of being the youngest player to captain a team at the Women's World Cup, aged 19 years and 261 days against Germany on November 17, 1991.
