'They are like wounded lions' - Zimbabwe coach insists Super Eagles are not unbeatable in Uyo

Zimbabwe coach Michael Nees has insisted that Nigeria’s Super Eagles are vulnerable ahead of their crucial 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Uyo on March 25, stating that his team can pull off an upset despite their struggles in Group C.

The Warriors have endured a poor start to their qualifying campaign, picking up just two points from four matches.

They currently sit bottom of the group, while Nigeria, who have also failed to win any of their opening four games, are just one spot above them in fifth place with three points.

Ahead of the clash, Nees acknowledged the challenge of facing the Super Eagles on their home turf but maintained that Nigeria is not unbeatable.

"Like us, Nigeria have their back against the wall; they are like wounded lions who want to turn the page (after a poor start to the qualifiers)," Nees was quoted as saying by The Herald.

"It will be an exciting game, and Nigeria are beatable in Uyo," he added.

The Super Eagles have struggled to impose themselves in the qualifiers, picking up just three points in their last four matches, including a 1-1 result against Zimbabwe.

Their disappointing form led to the departure of former coach José Peseiro, with Eric Chelle taking charge to revive their campaign.

Chelle has already made some significant changes to the squad, calling up new players in a bid to improve the team’s fortunes.

One of the fresh faces included is Genk striker Tolu Arokodare, who has scored 18 goals across all competitions this season.

The 24-year-old is seen as a potential alternative to Victor Osimhen and could provide an aerial threat against Zimbabwe.

In defense, Slavia Praha’s Igho Ogbu has earned a call-up, with the 25-year-old expected to compete for a starting role following injuries to key defenders like Semi Ajayi.

Meanwhile, Getafe midfielder Chrisantus Uche and Goztepe SK’s Anthony Dennis are among the new names in midfield as Nigeria looks to strengthen its squad depth.

Additionally, home-based players such as Papa Daniel (Niger Tornadoes), Ifeanyi Onyebuchi (Enugu Rangers), and Kayode Bankole (Remo Stars) have been rewarded for their performances in the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

While Zimbabwe remains winless in the qualifiers, Nees believes his side can take advantage of Nigeria’s struggles.

The Warriors have also made changes since their last meeting with the Super Eagles, with Nees taking charge after Brazilian Baltemar Britto and local coach Jairos Tapera had previously led the team.

With both teams desperate for a win to keep their World Cup hopes alive, the clash in Uyo promises to be a fiercely contested battle.

The Super Eagles will be aiming for their first victory, while Zimbabwe will be hoping to capitalize on Nigeria’s inconsistency and secure a famous win on Nigerian soil.
