Rayo Vallecano pushing to close deal for Real Madrid's Nigerian winger
Published: August 04, 2023Rayo Vallecano are in advanced talks to sign Real Madrid's history-making winger of Nigerian descent, Marvin Akinlabi.
Akinlabi entered into the history books as the first Nigeria-eligible footballer to play competitively for Real Madrid’s first team when he made his La Liga debut against Real Sociedad on September 20, 2020.
According to Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo, Rayo Vallecano have made the direct move to sign Akinlabi, and the objective of Los Franjirrojos is to gain 50 percent of the federative rights of the 23-year-old.
The former Spain youth international was loaned out to UD Las Palmas for the whole of last season,playing 24 matches in the league and contributing one goal and an assist to help them secure promotion to La Liga.
Akinlabi was a key member of the Real Madrid squad that won the UEFA Youth League in August 2020.
He has been on the books of Real Madrid since July 1, 2016 after spells with the youth teams of Sporting Ciutat de Palma, Tranmere Rovers, SD La Salle and Es Jonquet Penya Arrabal.
Rayo Vallecano will battle Almeria at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos in their opening game of the new La Liga season on August 11, 2023.
