West Brom take son of former Super Eagles defender on trial with view to transfer
Published: August 11, 2023Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Championship club West Brom have taken Ruben Shakpoke on trial with a view to a transfer this summer.
Ruben is the son of former Super Eagles fullback Jero Shakpoke, who was earmarked by ex-Nigeria coach Bora Milutinović to be the first choice right-back at the 1998 World Cup, only for him to suffer a career threatening injury in a pre-World Cup friendly against Netherlands eight days before Nigeria's opener.
Ruben Shakpoke is on the lookout for a new club after his departure from Aston Villa at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
The striker, wearing the number 9 jersey, started and was in action for the entirety of the first half as the Baggies kicked-off their 2023-2024 Premier League 2 campaign with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Bodymoor Heath on Friday night.
Tulloch slotted into the far post with 24 minutes on the clock after a cross from the right wing by Shakpoke, before a second half brace from Jamie Andrews wrapped up the victory.
Shakpoke will be looking to prove his injury problems are a thing of the past during his trial period at West Brom.
The 19-year-old struggled with injuries at Aston Villa, which limited his appearances to fourteen games combined in the U18 Premier League and Premier League 2 across three seasons.
Meanwhile, Norway underage international Femi Olofinjana, who is the son of former Super Eagles midfielder Seyi Olofinjana, has signed his first professional contract with Birmingham City following his release by West Brom at the end of last season.
