'It's disappointing' - Dessers reacts to PSV Eindhoven's demolition job on Rangers
Published: August 30, 2023PSV Eindhoven fired a warning to their potential Champions League opponents after thrashing Rangers 5-1 at the Phillips Stadion to progress to the group stage of the competition.
On his return to the Netherlands, former NAC Breda, FC Utrecht, Heracles Almelo and Feyenoord striker Cyriel Dessers was not as effective as he was in recent games and was hauled off just past the hour mark.
The Scottish Premiership side were expected to pose a threat particularly on the counter but it never materialized..
Despite a bright opening minutes from Rangers, it was PSV who deservedly took the lead through Ismael Saibari ten minutes before halftime.
And Saibari go this brace eight minutes after the restart but it became 2-1 at minute 65 as James Tavernier got one back to give Michael Beale's side hope.
However, PSV scored three goals in pretty quick succession through Luuk De Jong, Joey Veerman and Connor Goldson (own goal) to send the Eindhoven club to the group stage of the Champions League.
Dessers was hugely disappointed with the outcome of the game and admitted that PSV's quality told in the end despite Rangers giving them a run for their money at Ibrox about a week ago.
"Obviously it’s disappointing. We came here with high hopes after a good performance last week, where we had PSV under control," Dessers told UEFA's official website.
"We started well, but PSV then came into the game, and they have a lot of quality in every department."
Rangers have no time to dwell on the result against PSV Eindhoven as they face bitter rivals Celtic on Sunday, September 3.
