Hale End product Akpom finally makes his competitive debut for Ajax Amsterdam
Published: September 03, 2023Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom finally made his competitive debut for Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon as they were held to a goalless draw by Fortuna Sittard in an Eredivisie clash at Fortuna Sittard Stadion,
Ajax Amsterdam confirmed the capture of Akpom eighteen days ago, signing him on a five-year deal from Middlesbrough F.C.
Ajax will pay a guaranteed fee of €12.3 million to Middlesbrough and the amount can increase to €14.3 million through performance-related add-ons.
Akpom was not called up for three consecutive matches due to work permit issues.
The 27-year-old watched the league match versus Excelsior from the stands and missed back-to-back Europa League playoff round games with Ludogorets.
Against Fortuna Sittard, the Super Eagles hopeful was named in an Ajax Amsterdam matchday squad for the first time and came off the bench in the 62nd minute to replace Brian Brobbey for his debut.
With Akpom on the pitch, Ajax searched for a winning goal but the Fortuna Sittard defence held resolute.
Ajax go into the international break undefeated after three league games but they are four points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven who have a one hundred percent record.
