UEFA highlight four traits of Osimhen that earned him Player of the Match in Napoli's win at Braga
Published: September 21, 2023
UEFA's Technical Observer Panel selected Victor Osimhen as the Player of the Match in Napoli's 2-1 road win against Sporting de Braga on matchday one of the Champions League despite the striker not getting on the scoresheet in ninety minutes of action at the Estádio Municipal de Braga.
Osimhen's goal drought at club level has now extended to three games in all competitions after his game-high nine shots failed to find the back of the net in his latest match.
At minute ten, the Nigeria international - top scorer in 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying with 10 goals - had an attempt at goal but Braga goalkeeper Matheus did well to claw away his header.
Midway through the first half, Osimhen had another chance to open the scoring but his header went wide and three minutes later he was denied by the woodwork, before seeing a penalty he won overturned following a VAR review.
In the 57th minute, Osimhen's shot from around 20 meters narrowly missed the target.
Though the Nigerian was not among the scorers, UEFA's Technical Observer Panel highlighted four qualities Osimhen showed during the game that earned him the Player of the Match.
"Fast and powerful, extremely dangerous in the box and brilliant play with his back to goal!," UEFA wrote on their official website.
After Giovanni Di Lorenzo's opener on the stroke of halftime, Braga thought they had rescued a point in the 84th minute when Bruma headed home but an own goal by Niakaté gave the Italians all three points.
