Super Eagles player ratings: Onyeka makes a statement; Uzoho under scrutiny again; Aribo versatile; Iwobi impact sub
Published: October 16, 2023The Super Eagles got the better of Mozambique 3-2 in their last game ahead of the back-to-back 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe next month.
Allnigeriasoccer.com runs the rule over the Super Eagles players on parade at the Estádio Municipal de Albufeira.
The starters
Goalkeeper:
Francis Uzoho: He did nothing to silence his critics and should have dealt better with the two goals conceded particularly the first one 3/10
Defenders
Bruno Onyemaechi: It wasn't the best game for the left back who lost most of his 1v1 duels. He also failed to make an impact in the attacking third. 6/10
Jordan Torunarigha: The Gent centre-back was handed his debut and was solid though partly at fault for Mozambique's first goal. He did very well to cover for the left back whenever he bumped forward. 6/10
Kenneth Omeruo: He should have done better to prevent the pass that led to Mozambique's first goal.Besides that, he was decent. 6/10
Bright Osayi-Samuel: Like his opposite fullback, the Fenerbahçe's defender wasn't at his best. He wasn't faced with much defensively and made some good attacking runs but his end product was average all-day 6.5/10
Midfielders and strikers
Moses Simon:He wasn't as decisive as he was against Saudi Arabia. His set pieces were decent and worked his socks off, covering well for the fullbacks. 6/10
Frank Onyeka: He initially played as the most advanced of the two central midfielders and did majestically well, capping it up with a goal. Also, put in a good shift when asked to sit deep. 9/10
Raphael Onyedika: Tasked with the responsibility of protecting his back line, Onyedika didn't play poorly in what was his first-ever start for Nigeria 6.5/10
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru: The Manchester City Academy product got handed his debut in the encounter. Besides playing a hand in the build-up to the second goal, he wasn't spectacular though did combine well with his teammates at times. 6/10
Terem Moffi: The Nice striker showed good positioning and awareness for his goal but didn't make much impact besides that. 7/10
Joe Aribo: This was his best performance in a Super Eagles jersey in a while. Started by partnering with Moffi in attack and was a handful for the Mambas' defensive line. He was further deployed deep in the second half and didn't look out of place 7.5/10
The substitutes
Umar Sadiq: He didn't do anything to cover himself in glory when he came on and failed to justify his inclusion into the team yet again with his clumsiness in the penalty area 4/10
Chidozie Awaziem: He wasn't faced with much but didn't look out of place. 5/10
Alex Iwobi: Made sure Nigeria maintained control of the game as Mozambique attempted to level the scoreline.6/10
Ademola Lookman: Looked lively when he was brought on and could have had an assist but his decision-making still needs improvement. 5.5/10
Calvin Bassey: Gave no room for the opposition to cause danger, made a vital block. 6/10
Victor Boniface: Could have gotten on the scoresheet but had his goal ruled out for offside. Besides that, offered nothing much. 5/10
