What Osimhen said after scoring 15th goal of the season in Galatasaray's draw against Dynamo Kyiv
Published: January 22, 2025
Victor Osimhen reflected on Galatasaray’s thrilling 3-3 Europa League draw against Dynamo Kyiv with a mix of disappointment and resolve.
The Nigerian forward, who played a pivotal role by scoring his team’s third goal, shared his thoughts in a post-match interview.
"We are disappointed. We thought we deserved more,” Osimhen told the match broadcaster, according to Galatasaray's official website.
"We need to take responsibility as a team. I think we all made mistakes. They also fought well and scored goals.
“There were two consecutive draws. Now we need to work and learn from our mistakes. We need to focus on the upcoming matches.”
Osimhen’s penalty in the 53rd minute extended Galatasaray’s lead to 3-1, marking his 21st goal contribution of the season—15 goals and six assists.
The Napoli loanee exhibited his trademark composure, sending Dynamo Kyiv goalkeeper Ruslan Neshcheret the wrong way with a powerful strike after a VAR review confirmed a handball.
His ability to perform under pressure once again underscored his importance to the Turkish giants.
However, Dynamo Kyiv mounted a spirited comeback, with Andriy Yarmolenko’s late equalizer denying Galatasaray a much-needed win.
Osimhen acknowledged the need for improvement in his team’s cohesion and decision-making.
"We need to understand each other better at certain moments,” he explained.
"If I'm going strong, I look at who I can pass to and who I can receive the pass from. We could have scored more goals today. We need to learn from our mistakes and be better."
Osimhen’s performance went beyond his goal. His aerial dominance, sharp movement, and relentless energy created multiple opportunities. A notable moment came in the 63rd minute when his powerful header forced an acrobatic save from Neshcheret. His ability to link up with teammates ensured that Galatasaray remained a constant attacking threat despite Kyiv’s resilience.
Despite Osimhen’s heroics, Galatasaray walked away from the match with mixed emotions, as the draw left them ruing missed opportunities. The team’s back-to-back stalemates have highlighted areas needing improvement, particularly in maintaining defensive stability.
Osimhen’s remarks reflected a commitment to addressing these shortcomings. “We need to work and learn from our mistakes,” he reiterated. His words emphasize the collective responsibility within the squad to bounce back stronger.
Galatasaray remains in a competitive position in their group, but they will need to translate their attacking prowess into consistent results if they aim to progress in the tournament.
With Osimhen in fine form, the Turkish side has a talisman capable of leading their charge.
However, as the forward pointed out, success will depend on the team’s ability to adapt and improve in crucial moments.
As the Europa League campaign continues, all eyes will remain on Osimhen and his ability to inspire Galatasaray to greater heights.
