'No contact with national team' - Ligue 1's second top scorer plays down chances of Super Eagles call-up

French Ligue 1's second top scorer Akor Adams has played down the chances of being called up to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the upcoming 2026 World cup qualifiers.

Adams has been in impressive form for Montpellier in the French top flight this term, becoming the first player to score 7 goals after ten games in twelve years for the club and has only been outscored by Kylian Mbappe who has 10 goals for Paris Saint-Germain.

This also places him as the joint-top scorer among Nigerian players playing their trade in the top five leagues in Europe, with Victor Boniface being the only player to have scored as much as him.

When asked about his chances of being called up to the Nigeria squad after scoring a brace in Montpellier's triumph over Toulouse yesterday, the 23-year-old admitted that he has not had contact with the Nigeria Football Federation and manager Jose Peseiro.

"The Nigerian selection? For the moment, I remain focused on my performances with Montpellier, I have no contact with the selection," Adams told France Bleu, via allezpaillade.

Nigeria will kickstart their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month with back-to-back games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

With uncertainty surrounding the fitness of star striker Victor Osimhen, there could be an open window of opportunity for Adams to be handed his first call-up by José Peseiro.
