Tottenham Hotspur midfielder of Nigerian descent becomes provisionally cap-tied to England

Highly-rated Tottenham Hotspur midfielder of Nigerian descent, Callum Olusesi became provisionally cap-tied to England on Friday after he was named in the Young Lions' starting lineup for a 2024 European U17 Championship qualifying match against Faroe Islands at Stadion Ivan Laljak-Ivić (Zaprešić), allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
A midfielder by trade, the London-born player qualifies to represent Nigeria through his father and played in five matches for the U17s before making his first competitive appearance for the 2017 world champions.
Olusesi was previously in the England U16 set-up, winning the Montagu Cup, prior to his promotion to the U17s for the 2023-2024 season.
Against Faroe Islands, England were in control from the beginning of the game to the end and goals flowed, with Greg Lincoln's team scoring eight without reply.
In the goal-laden game, Olusesi provided the assist for England's opening goal netted by Jack Fletcher and came close to scoring his first goal for the age group in the 35th minute when he struck the woodwork.
Tottenham Hotspur saw off competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Newcastle United to tie him down to a new deal in the summer of 2023.
The 2007-born player is expected to sign his first professional contract with the north London club as from March 2024.
Meanwhile, Manchester City defender Leke Drake was a non-playing substitute against Faroe Islands and would become provisionally cap-tied to England if he is given minutes in their next game against Kosovo on Monday, November 6.
