Youngest Serie A player in history: AC Milan's Camarda breaks record held by Super Eagles-eligible CB Amey
Published: November 26, 2023The biggest story of the Serie A meeting between AC Milan and Fiorentina at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on Saturday night was neither Samuel Chukwueze making his first back-to-back start in the Italian top flight nor Theo Hernández's game-winning goal from the penalty spot, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
History was made in the 83rd minute when Francesco Camarda came off the bench to replace Luka Jović.
In doing so, the AC Milan academy product became the youngest player to make his debut in Serie A history, aged 15 years and 260 days.
Camarda broke the record previously held by Bologna central defender Wisdom Amey who debuted at 15 years and 274 days.
Born in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, Amey is eligible to represent his country of birth Italy as well as Nigeria through his mother, Bose Jacob and Togo through his father.
Italy U17 international Camarda was promoted to AC Milan's first team on a temporary basis with cap-tied Switzerland international of Nigerian descent Noah Okafor injured and former Arsenal and Chelsea center forward Olivier Giroud suspended.
Mohammed Aliyu Datti is the youngest Nigerian-born player in history to debut in the Italian top flight and the first to play in the division before his seventeenth birthday.
The retired Nigeria international wrote his name in the history books when he made his Serie A debut for AC Milan in a 3-2 win at Bologna on January 24, 1999 at the age of 16 years and 316 days.
The then AC Milan coach, Alberto Zaccheroni handed a debut to Datti due to the unavailability of Zvonimir Boban and George Weah.
Datti was one year and 56 days older than the current Serie A record holder, Francesco Camarda.
