Best player on the African continent Osimhen sets Napoli record with goal against Cagliari
Published: December 17, 2023Newly-crowned African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen found the back of the net to help reigning Italian champions Napoli secure a a 2-1 win over Cagliari in a Serie A clash at the Diego Maradona Stadium on Saturday evening.
Osimhen had the first real chance of the game in the ninth minute but could not hit the target before Amir Rrahmani came close to grabbing a goal but saw his header hit the post in the 29th minute.
The best player on the African continent finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a brilliant header after a cross from Mário Rui.
According to the statisticians at OPTA, Osimhen created Napoli history with his goal as he became the first player to score in each of his first four Serie A matches against two different teams, since the 1994-1995 season.
The Nigeria international netted in his first four games against Sampdoria, mustering five goals in total, and Saturday's strike meant he has also scored in four consecutive appearances versus Cagliari.
Leonardo Pavoletti, with a close range effort, scored against his former club to restore parity and he owed plenty to the brilliant wing play of Zito Luvumbo in the 72nd minute.
Osimhen had a hand in Napoli's game-winning goal with fifteen minutes left on the clock when his outrageous assist led to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's goal.
