Published: December 17, 2023Bayer Leverkusen have opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the German Bundesliga table after thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 at the BayArena on Sunday evening, with Nigeria international Victor Boniface on target for Xabi Alonso's side.
Boniface was handed his fifteenth consecutive start in the Bundesliga while international teammate Nathan Tella was named among the substitutes.
The Super Eagles striker opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a low shot that went under Kevin Trapp's outstretched hand after he was fed by Wirtz.
Wirtz has six assists to his name in this season's Bundesliga, three of which have been provided to Boniface.
Bayer waited until six minutes into the second half before doubling the advantage, with Boniface involved in the build-up.
Trapp got a hand to a shot from Boniface but Jeremie Frimpong was on hand to tap in the loose ball.
Bayer Leverkusen were out of sight in the 57th minute as Wirtz, with a brilliant finish, increased the lead after a lovely pass from Boniface.
Boniface's goal and assist against Eintracht Frankfurt meant he has directly participated in 23 goals (15 goals, 8 assists) from 22 games across all competitions and he's at the top of the ladder among U23 players from Europe's top five leagues.
The Nigerian overtook 2023 Golden Boy and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham who has 21 goal involvements (16 goals, 5 assists) in nineteen appearances across all competitions.
Tella was thrown into the mix in the 83rd minute, replacing Jeremie Frimpong.
