How Samuel Chukwueze can translate UEFA Champions League form to Serie A
Published: December 18, 2023Samuel Chukwueze has been lighting up the Champions League in recent weeks for Milan.
The Nigerian winger scored stunning goals against Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle in the group stage, showcasing the talent that convinced Milan to acquire him this past summer.
However, his Serie A form has yet to match these European highs on a consistent basis.
In twelve domestic league appearances thus far, Chukwueze is yet to find the back of the net for the Rossoneri, assisting just once. For a player of his natural ability, this is simply not good enough.
In my opinion, if Chukwueze wants to play an instrumental role in Milan's hopes of a top four finish and secure a permanent first team role, he must replicate his Champions League displays week-in, week-out in Serie A.
Here are three things the 24-year-old must do to make this happen:
1. Increase Confidence and Composure
Chukwueze appears more self-assured in Europe, taking defenders on at will. He needs this same confidence in domestic games to have a consistent impact. When he has space, he must drive forward decisively rather than playing safe passes.
2. Improve Decision Making
Often frustrating so far in Serie A has been Chukwueze's wayward final ball and poor choice of when to shoot or pass. This results in many wasted attacking transitions. Quicker decision making will see his productivity rise sharply.
3. Enhance Work Rate Defensively
If he works harder off the ball to win back possession, the increased time on the ball will translate to more goal contributions. He has shown signs of this already under Pioli's tactics.
The talent is clearly evident with Chukwueze and he has shown he can dominate games in the Champions League.
To do this on Italian soil, implementing the above might help him become the dynamic weapon down the flank that Milan hoped for when they signed him from Villarreal in the summer.
