Nigeria's number one goalscorer in 2023: Gift Orban out to stop Osimhen and last year's winner Ighalo
Published: December 21, 2023African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen is well-placed to finish this year as the top-scoring Nigerian player of 2023.
With his goal against Cagliari last weekend, Osimhen reached 29 goals in all competitions since the start of 2023, more than any other Nigerian player in the world.
The Napoli attacker has scored two goals more than his mentor, former Manchester United star Odion Ighalo who has mustered 27 goals in all competitions combined for Al-Hilal and current club Al-Wehda.
Napoli have two more games to play before the year runs out, same as Ighalo's Al-Wehda, so the battle to be crowned the top-scoring Nigerian player of 2023 will go down to the wire.
Ighalo scored the most goals by a Nigerian player in the in the 2022 calendar year, 27 in total, beating Paul Onuachu (21) to the prize.
The former Racing Genk goal poacher was the top-scoring Nigerian player in 2021 with an impressive 30 goals from 45 all-competition appearances.
KAA Gent striker Gift Orban can still catch Osimhen and Ighalo in the race to be crowned Nigeria's number one goalscorer in the world having mustered 26 goals in 2023, and will be hoping this two rivals fire blanks while he delivers the goods in his last two games this year.
Completing the top five Nigerian players with the most goals in 2023 are Montpellier's Akor Adams (25) and Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface (24).
