Confirmed: Terem Moffi replaces Boniface in Super Eagles AFCON squad pending approval of CAF
Published: January 09, 2024According to a press release from the Nigeria Football Federation and made available to allnigeriasoccer.com, Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro has called in a replacement for injured Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface.
Boniface withdrew from the Super Eagles squad heading to the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a muscular injury that could keep him sidelined for a minimum of one month.
OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi has taken the place of Boniface, pending the approval of Confederation of African Football.
The Nigeria Football Federation have also underlined that Moffi has to get the green light from OGC Nice before reporting for international duty.
According to CAF's regulations, a player in the final squad can only be replaced after a serious injury no less than 24 hours before the team’s first match.
Moffi was a surprise omission from Nigeria's final 25-man squad taking into account that he had been called up for every single game played by the Super Eagles under Jose Peseiro, with the exception of the internationals last June against Sierra Leone and São Tomé and Príncipe.
The former Lorient player made his international debut in a friendly against Cameroon in June 2021 and has gone on to make a further 13 appearances for the national team, scoring four goals.
Moffi is a household name in the French Ligue 1, having mustered 46 goals in 119 matches while registering 12 assists.
