'Excited about it' - Dad wants free-scoring Chelsea youth teamer to represent Nigeria over Cameroon, England
Published: January 17, 2024Ndubuisi Ezenwata, the father of free-scoring Chelsea youth teamer Chizzy Ezenwata, has revealed that he wants his son to prioritize playing for Nigeria at international level.
Chizzy was born in England and eligible to play for England's Young Lions, and can also turn out for Cameroon by virtue of being born to a Cameroonian mother.
The 15-year-old has earned rave reviews for his impressive performances for Chelsea's youth teams since landing at Cobham in August, with 22 goals and five assists in fifteen games for the U15s and U16s.
One of the best players in his age group in the whole of England, he scored more than 100 goals while registering over 40 assists in all competitions in the two seasons he spent at Charlton Athletic prior to his move to Chelsea.
Football runs in Chizzy's veins as his father played with 1993 Fifa U17 World Cup winner Kanu Nwanwko back in the day, and also represented Orient FC, Black Stars of Gombe and Gombe United where he was coached by 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup-winning coach Manu Garba.
Speaking on the international future of his two sons including Chizzy, Ndubuisi Ezenwata said: "There is no youth team in the world as successful as the Golden Eaglets and I want my son to have that success as well if it is possible.
"Obviously they are eligible for England where they were born and Cameroon where their mom comes from, we've had contact as well from the Cameroon FA through my in-law who is a former schoolmate of Samuel Eto'o.
"I would definitely want Nigeria not Cameroon, no other country in Africa but Nigeria and he'd benefit. I know the coaching they give at that youth level in Nigeria is top-notch.
"Any player who passes through our youth system could make it into any club in the world and just perform, when you look at the likes of Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Obi Mikel, Kanu Nwankwo.
"That is why I want him to play for Nigeria youth levels and all the way to the Super Eagles. It's up to him to make a decision when he becomes an adult. I have spoken to him and his younger brother and they are really excited about it."
Chizzy, who also lists West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur as his former clubs, has already been offered a pre-scholarship deal at Chelsea.
