Super Eagles v Indomitable Lions: Peseiro speaks on changing Chukwueze, Simons roles; Cameroon GK situation
Published: January 26, 2024Super Eagles coach José Peseiro has spoken about changing the tactical roles of Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon while also addressing the goalkeeping crisis of the Central Africa side ahead of tomorrow's clash between both teams in the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Both wingers have struggled since the start of the competition and failed to register any goal contribution in the opening games played in the group stage.
Simon has started two games so far having dropped to the bench against Ivory Coast while Chukwueze also has two starts, having failed to make the starting lineup in the opening game against Equatorial Guinea.
Speaking in his pre-match conference ahead of tomorrow's tie, Peseiro spoke on whether to change the tactical roles of the AC Milan and Nantes wingers to create more opportunities for Victor Osimhen.
"Every time, we have a plan and some strategy. Each match, I tell my players you can do this better, you must improve that situation and that was good," Peseiro told reporters.
"We choose our way, model, our game to play. Every time we can improve because in national team we don't have enough time to develop or improve. "
When asked about the goalkeeping crisis of the Indomitable Lions, the Portuguese-born tactician has played down the situation stating that it is insignificant.
"It is not an issue for me. I believe and share with my players that we are good to play against good and strong teams, only that."
Manchester United's shot-stopper André Onana is Cameroon's first choice but having arrived late for the tournament, Fabrice Ondoa was used for the first match against Guinea
Onana would regain his place in their encounter against Senegal but lost his position again in the last group game against The Gambia.
It remains to be seen whether the former Inter Milan goalkeeper will start from the bench tomorrow
