Ex-Ligue 1 Golden Boot winner names six Nigeria players that have caught his eye at 2023 AFCON
Published: January 29, 2024French Ligue 1 Golden Boot winner for the 1993-1994 season, Roger Boli has named six Super Eagles players that have impressed him at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ivorian born Roger Boli, is the brother of retired France international Basile Boli, who is famously remembered for scoring the winning goal for Marseille as they beat AC Milan in the 1993 Champions League final.
The older Boli is in on commentary duties for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d'Ivoire 2023 for CAF TV.
Analyzing the competition so far, Roger Boli says he has been left impressed by the performances of six Nigerian players, namely William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
At the 2023 AFCON, the Super Eagles have been more solid in defence than they have been for some time, keeping three consecutive clean sheets, with the aforementioned Nigeria defenders playing significant roles in the team's improvement.
Italian-based duo Lookman and Osimhen produced a stellar attacking display in Nigeria's 2-0 win over the Indomitable Lions, with the winger bagging a brace and the striker setting up his first goal.
"In the other teams, I like the collective strength of Nigeria, especially the central defense which have not conceded many goals," Boli told CAF's official website.
"Ekong, Ajayi, Bassey and also Aina who does a great job on the pitch just like Lookman and Osimhen who even if he doesn't score, brings a lot to his team. His work rate is important for the team."
Nigeria will be back in action on Friday, February 2 when they take on Angola in a quarterfinal clash at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
