Chelsea legend predicts the two countries that will make it to the final of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations
Published: February 05, 2024Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has predicted that the Super Eagles will face Ivory Coast in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Both sides are in the last four in the tournament with Nigeria set to face South Africa in the first semifinal on Wednesday evening while the Elephants have a clash with Democratic Republic of Congo afterward.
Should they get past South Africa and DR Congo respectively, it would be the second time they will be meeting having previously battled each other in the group stage where the Super Eagles beat the Elephants by a solitary goal.
Speaking on The Obi One podcast podcast on whether it will be a Ivory Coast against Nigeria final, Mikel reckoned that the two West African giants will face each other again in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
"I think so. I was thinking about it the the other day and I was thinking that we managed to beat them in the group stage and they were on the verge of leaving, the tournament and all of a sudden you know, they are back in it and now," Mikel said.
"They have got a wind with them and now are playing prettily okay but not so well, but they have started to win games and now if they can manage to get to the final, who knows?"
The former Chelsea midfielder will be hoping that the current crop of Super Eagles players can repeat what he and his teammates did in 2013 when they lifted the competition for the third time.
Ivory Coast were Nigeria's successor having won the trophy in 2015 and are seeking to win it for the third time and the first on their home soil.
