Nigerian exports: FC Zurich's Mathew scores after 10 seconds; Excelsior's Ivorian-Nigerian striker ends goal drought
Published: March 04, 2024Allnigeriasoccer.com's review of the Nigerian players that found the net for their respective foreign clubs in league matches on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
At the Stadion Letzigrund, 2015 Africa U20 Cup of Nations-winning midfielder Ifeanyi Mathew was the hero for FC Zürich as he netted the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over BSC Young Boys.
After ten seconds, Mathew volleyed home from just outside the box after a defensive clearance fell to him.
It was the fastest goal scored in the Swiss Super League so far in the 2023-2024 campaign and one of the fastest in the history of the competition.
Previously, Moussa Konaté (March 2015) and Ermir Lenjani (April 2019) netted for Sion after ten seconds of play.
Elsewhere, Sweden U20 international of Ivorian and Nigerian descent, Richie Omoruwa ended a 12-game goal drought in the Dutch Eredivisie but his goal counted for nothing with Excelsior Rotterdam losing 5-2 away at Fortuna Sittard.
Omoruwa, who came off the bench at halftime, reduced the deficit in the 82nd minute when he poked home from close range, taking his tally for Excelsior Rotterdam to two in the process following his move from Brommapojkarna last summer.
In the Jupiler Pro League, Chidera Ejuke inspired reigning champions Royal Antwerp to a 3-0 rout of Sint-Truidense VV at De Bosuil.
The Super Eagles winger doubled the advantage in the 74th minute and turned from scorer to provider in the 87th minute when he teed up Jacob Ondrejka.
Ejuke now has nine goal involvements (4 goals, 5 assists) for the season from 28 games across all competitions.
