The Future of the Champions League
Published: March 12, 2024
The Champions League is one of the most historic competitions in all of sports and has had some of the best football players of all time play in it. Over the last decade, several players have played in the Champions League and been the best players in the world.
Players like Messi, Ronaldo, and Kevin De Bruyne have all been some of the best players of this generation and of all time and have been very successful in the Champions League. The next wave of players is starting to appear, and that begs the question: who will run the Champions League in the future?
Erling Haaland
This is the least controversial player on the list; a player who's arguably already running the Champions League and a lot of people's choice for last year's Ballon d'Or which was ultimately won by Lionel Messi.
A ridiculous goal record and a Champions League trophy were already under his belt before his 23rd birthday. Playing for Manchester City, who are one of the best teams in the world, is a massive platform for his ability, and there’s no doubt he deserves to be there. Many bookmakers, like Boylesports, have Manchester City as favourites this year, and most people who bet on the UEFA Champions League will choose City with Haaland being a big factor in this choice. The 6-foot-4, imposing striker is the future of football and will arguably go down as one of the best strikers to play the beautiful game. With 41 goals already in the competition, he could end his career with 100 or more goals in the Champions League.
Victor Osihmen
What many could believe to be an outside shout, Osihmen has already proven himself on the biggest stage and took Napoli to the first scudetto in 33 years last season.
He was one of the best players last season, and this season will not be different. This trend could carry on for a decade. When he leaves Napoli and signs for regular Champions League favourites, he will be regarded as one of the best players in the world.
Kylian Mbappe
Another player who is already regarded as one of the best in the world is without a doubt going to be remembered as one of the best players of all time. Getting 46 goals in 69 games, considering the age at which he made his UCL debut, is a great record.
Primarily starting as a winger, he is wickedly talented and will only get better as he gets closer to his prime. As this season is expected to be his last at PSG, we expect him to get his hands on the Champions League trophy sooner rather than later.
Declan Rice
The new 100 million-pound man has changed Arsenal for the better, and you can tell the difference that he has made for them as a team. As Arsenal gets stronger and becomes a bigger force in the Champions League, we expect him to follow this same trajectory and get better and better over time. This current UCL season is his first in the competition, and you can already tell the difference, you can feel that he is made to play and lead in those big games.
Jamal Musiala
The most recent addition to the list, the teenager has been a shining light for Bayern Munich since he became a regular starter for them. Being only 21, he has a long career ahead of him. Whether it's with Bayern or with a new team, we expect him to lead the midfield and get many Champions League trophies in his career.
Conclusion
The next 10 years of the Champions League are going to be very exciting, and with the players we listed and with many more coming through the ranks, we are expecting the landscape of football to change and become even stronger, these players could be at the forefront of that.
