Osimhen matches feat of Higuaín, Mertens by scoring in sixth consecutive game against single team
Published: May 06, 2024Super Eagles star striker Victor Osimhen was on the scoresheet for Napoli during their 1-1 draw with Udinese in a Serie A fixture played at the Bluenergy Stadium on Monday night.
He opened the scoring in the 51st minute through a well-executed header into the net from Matteo Politano's precise cross to score for the second consecutive game.
According to statisticians from Opta, the reigning CAF Men's Player of the Year has become the third Napoli player to score in six consecutive games against the same opponent in the Serie A.
The other two are Dries Mertens who did same against Bologna and Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuaín who also replicated same against Lazio.
Osimhen's goalscoring run against Udinese started in 2021 when the Parthenopeans battered them 4-0 and has scored against them since then.
He could have scored his eighth goal against the White and Blacks today when he slammed the ball home in the 80th minute but his strike was ruled out with the assistance of the VAR.
Three minutes later, he got another chance to get on the scoresheet but his weak shot was calmly collected by his international teammate Maduka Okoye.
Isaac Success would deny Napoli the maximum points in the stoppage time, putting the ball into the back of the net from Thomas Kristensen's header.
