Euro 2024: Switzerland could cap-tie Salzburg's quad-national CB; two other 'Nigerians' in provisional squad
Published: May 17, 2024The Swiss Football Association on Friday morning announced the national team's provisional roster for the upcoming European Championship, with three players of Nigerian descent included in the training camp squad.
The big news is the inclusion of the uncapped Red Bull Salzburg central defender Bryan Okoh who has made only two appearances for the first team of the Austrian giants.
Manchester City star Manuel Akanji, a two-time World Cupper, and AC Milan dazzler Noah Okafor are among the 38 players picked by Switzerland manager Murat Yakin.
Yakin has informed that some young players were named to the training camp roster because many experienced players like Akanji are not yet available to train with the national team due to club commitments.
Born in Houston, Texas to a Congolese mother and Nigerian father, Okoh is also eligible to wear the colours of the Super Eagles, The Stars and Stripes and Leopards at international level apart from Switzerland, where he grew up.
The quad-national defender would become cap-tied to Switzerland if he is selected for the 2024 European Championship and plays, even for a second, during the tournament in Germany.
Okoh was called up by Switzerland for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Bulgaria in November 2021 but couldn't make his senior debut after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee during preparations.
Although Akanji and Okafor are cap-tied to Switzerland, the former FC Basel players are proud of their Nigerian heritage.
