Arsenal offer new deal to talented defender eligible for Nigeria and three other countries
Published: June 03, 2024According to Arsenal youth team expert Jeorge Bird, promising right back Josh Nichols has been offered a professional contract after breaking into the U21s in the just concluded season.
The defender is eligible to play for Nigeria through his mother, England by virtue of being his country of birth and can as well represent Jamaica and Guyana through his father.
Nichols joined the north London side at the Under-9 level where he played with Premier League youngest ever debutant Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
He was offered a scholarship deal in 2022 and has grown in leaps and bounds since then, featuring prominently for the U18s who are being coached by Jack Wilshere and now the development side.
The Hale End Academy product made his Premier League 2 debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 2023 and played in nine matches in the regular season in 2023-2024.
Having impressed on the few occasions he played, coach Mehmet Ali showed trust in him by giving him minutes in the playoffs games against Manchester United and Chelsea.
He scored just three goals last term, one in the U18 Premier League and the others in the UEFA Youth League and U18 Premier League Cup.
Interestingly, Nicols started out as a striker and that is why he looked up to record Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi while growing up.
