Ajax Amsterdam eye move for Burnley striker as a potential replacement for Akpom
Published: June 19, 2024Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam are interested in signing Burnley's Netherlands international Wout Weghorst.
According to The Telegraph, Ajax are considering a move for Weghorst in a cut price deal with the Clarets.
The report added that Ajax would be in the market for a striker, given the uncertain futures of Chuba Akpom, and Steven Bergwijn.
Weghorst has one season remaining on his contract with Burnley, who will compete in the Championship next year, and Ajax are hoping to sign him at a reduced fee because of these two factors.
With Akpom anticipated to move on during the summer transfer window, Ajax have identified Weghorst as the striker to compete with Brian Brobbey and serve as a backup.
The Arsenal-reared attacker is angling for a move from Ajax due to a lack of consistent playing time in his first season in Amsterdam.
Akpom was heavily linked with a departure from Ajax in the January transfer window, with Fulham and Nottingham Forest mentioned as his possible destinations, but Ajax blocked his potential return to England.
Despite playing a bit part role for Ajax, the former Middlesbrough.man delivered the goods, scoring fifteen goals and providing three assist in thirty-six appearances, eleven of which he started.
