Super Eagles stars that could make huge summer switches: Ndidi and Osimhen
Published: June 25, 2024The soccer nation of Nigeria boasts an abundance of talent that plays across Europe's top leagues. Players from the West African country frequently make high-caliber moves across the continent, and there is potential for huge switches to take place this summer.
Some players will almost certainly be seeking new clubs due to expiring contracts. At the same time, other Super Eagles with long-term contracts could be tempted by a move to one of Europe's leading clubs before the window closes.
Here we will look at the Nigerian national team regulars who could be set to secure a lucrative fresh move ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Wilfred Ndidi
Wilfred Ndidi stuck with Leicester City when they were relegated from the Premier League last season. However, with his contract due to expire this year, he will surely move on to avoid another relegation fight.
Ndidi could potentially stay in England and go to Everton, who are expected to avoid the drop according to the Premier League odds from Paddy Power. The Toffees are offered as 6/4 outsiders to drop down to the championship following 2024/25, while Leicester are favorites in the Premiership relegation odds at 2/5.
The defensive midfielder would not be making a huge upgrade in moving from Leicester to Everton, although he would certainly have a much more realistic chance of staying in the English top flight beyond 2025.
If Ndidi opts to move abroad instead, then the likes of Olympique Marseille and Galatasaray have been linked with him. The former would allow him to play in a more competitive league, while the latter would offer UEFA Champions League soccer.
There is even still a small possibility that Ndidi could agree to a surprise contract extension at the King Power Stadium, although fans of the club and Nigeria will fully be expecting their star to move on.
Victor Osimhen
Napoli owner Aurelio de Laurentiis has admitted Victor Osimhen will likely leave the Serie A in the coming months. This means Nigerian soccer fans should be braced for the biggest signing ever concerning a Super Eagle, it is just a question of where his next destination may be.
The Super Eagles forward is without doubt one of the most deadly strikers on the planet, and that means Europe's elite will be tracking him as a formality. He would demand a record fee for a player from his nation, although many clubs with a need for a top striker should have no problem with that.
Osimhen could make a remarkable switch to the Premier League, as he has been linked with London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea consistently. However, the team he may suit most that are most likely to make a move this summer is Paris Saint Germain.
The French champions will be on the lookout for a superstar addition to their frontline for the 2024/25 season to nullify the effects of losing Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid.
Osimhen offers much of the same traits as Mbappé; pace, directness, and excellent off-the-ball movement are his key assets, and he could excel in a central role for the Parisian club. The Qatari-owned team would likely be best positioned to produce the financial package for the signing, too.
Ultimately, two of Nigeria's biggest stars could be making moves to new clubs and potentially new nations this year.
Ndidi could be playing for a bigger club come the end of the summer, and he could even be a UCL-level player. Osimhen could be set to make the highlight move of 2024 with massive clubs in England and France interested in securing his signature.
