'If it goes to penalties' - Brentford hero Sodje backs Toney to make difference off the bench in Euro final
Published: July 14, 2024Brentford hero and former Super Eagles centre-back Sam Sodje is backing Ivan Toney to make the difference if introduced off the bench in the final of the 2024 European Championship between England and Spain on Sunday evening.
Toney has played second fiddle to England's all-time top scorer Harry Kane at the European Championship, logging only 41 minutes combined spread across two games.
He played the role of a super-sub in the two games he was given minutes by Gareth Southgate by providing the game-winning assist in the win versus Slovakia in the round of 16 and converted his spot kick as the Three Lions beat Switzerland on penalties to reach the last four.
Sodje highlighted the penalty-taking pedigree of Toney and stressed that the striker has proved that he can be called upon if England are chasing the game.
"I am a big fan of Toney because he's a Brentford player. We love him at Brentford - the first Brentford England international to play in a tournament," Sodje told allnigeriasoccer.com.
"We all hope he does well, he will always have an effect, the games he has come on he has done really well. so it depends on how the game is going.
"If it's going in a way England is struggling they would always want him in, and whenever he comes in, with the way he plays, I think he will definitely have an effect.
"If it goes to penalties, we all know what he's like in penalties. I'm looking forward to a good game from him but we are all hopeful that England can get to the position that they might not need him but if they need him I'm sure he will do well."
Toney netted on his full debut for England in a 2-2 draw with Belgium during an international friendly back in March.
