'Went to AFCON with Nigeria' - Trabzonspor coach admits Man Utd alum tops their striker wishlist, not Onuachu

Manager Abdullah Avci has revealed that Trabzonspor are prioritizing the signing of former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst over Southampton man Paul Onuachu.

The Turkish side retain an interest in the FC Ebedei product but risk missing out on him if they fail to pay his asking price,  coupled with the interest from Saudi Pro-League side Al-Okhdood.

The negotiation with the Saints hasn't been easy, with the recent remark from Trabzoinspor coach buttressing that, thus the reason the club is prioritizing a move for Weghorst over the Nigerian forward.

The Netherlands international has the experience of playing in the Turkish topflight, having played on loan with Beşiktaş in the 2022/2023 season, before moving to Manchester United in the second half of that campaign.

Speaking in an interview, Avci stated his concerns with Onuachu who played superbly for Trabzonspor last term, and the reason behind the club targeting Weghorst.

In quotes relayed by Istanbul-based newspaper Milliyet, Avci  said: "We could not get enough use out of Onuachu last season. He first went to the African Cup with the Nigerian National Team, then he suffered an injury.

"I do not want to face the same problems again. For this reason, Weghorst is a better fit for us. If we finalize his transfer, it would be a significant development for us."

The Netherlands international scored nine goals in 18 games for Beşiktaş and has the same physique as Onuachu.

The Super Eagles star is back training with Southampton who are currently in Spain for their pre-season training camp.
