2025 Afconq: Boniface under scrutiny and four other observations from Super Eagles win v Cheetahs

Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin on Saturday on matchday one of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, showcasing their resilience and attacking prowess.

The Super Eagles claimed victory with a standout performance from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.

Lookman opened the scoring for Nigeria in the final moments of the first half, and Osimhen extended the lead shortly after coming on in the second half.

Lookman completed his brace and secured Nigeria's third goal in the 83rd minute.

As the Super Eagles return to winning ways, allnigeriasoccer.com presents five key observations from their performance.

Gernot Rohr Adopts Physical Approach

Benin’s Cheetahs employed a physically compact strategy to challenge Nigeria in Uyo.

Under Gernot Rohr, Nigeria’s formation was conservative approach, aimed at neutralizing Nigeria's attacking threat.

Samuel Chukwueze Displeased with Substitution

AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze had a lackluster performance against Benin in Uyo.

He struggled to make an impact in the first half, failing to put pressure on the Benin defense as Lookman did.

Chukwueze also had difficulty getting past defenders, which led to his substitution in favour of Moses Simon.

The Nigerian winger appeared visibly disappointed with the decision, showing his frustration during the change.

Limited Support from Full Backs

Nigeria’s 3-4-3 formation featured Ola Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi in the wing-back positions.

Despite their advanced roles, both players struggled to support the forwards effectively in the first half.

Their lack of offensive contributions was notable, affecting the overall fluidity of Nigeria’s attack.

Victor Boniface Struggle Continues

Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface continued to face difficulties with the Super Eagles.

Despite being selected ahead of Osimhen, Boniface missed several key opportunities and failed to score.

His performance has been under scrutiny as he seeks to find his footing with the national team.

Full Team Celebrates As Osimhen Scores

Victor Osimhen’s goal marked a triumphant return to the Super Eagles, with the striker capitalizing on a cross from Wilfred Ndidi and a dummy from Seyi Ajayi.

After the goal, Osimhen celebrated with the Nigerian fans and was joined by the entire team including substitutes and backroom staff.
