Transfer delay: Why Golden Eaglets-eligible forward has not completed Liverpool move after Chelsea exit
Published: July 22, 2024Golden Eaglets-eligible forward Rio Ngumoha has agreed a move to Liverpool after turning down a new deal at Premier League rivals Chelsea, but his transfer to the Reds has yet to be completed.
The England U16 international of Nigerian descent is expected to join Liverpool on a scholarship deal and will sign his first professional contract on or after his seventeenth birthday.
Ngumoha has chosen a move to Merseyside over extending his stay at Chelsea as well as offers from other European sides who showed interest in him.
Italian transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano took to social media on Monday morning to explain why the young forward's move to Liverpool has not been finalized.
According to Romano, Ngumoha's registration is currently going through the Premier League's five-step investigation process which could take up to four weeks, then the move will be official.
The five-step review is a process of investigation conducted before registering any academy player.
Ngumoha will initially start his career at Liverpool with the U18 team, though he is eligible to included on their Premier League roster as an U21 player/scholar.
The 16-year-old links up with Nigeria-eligible trio Wellity Lucky Omoruyi, Louis Enahoro-Marcus and Afolami Onanuga at the Liverpool academy.
