Idowu scores a beauty on Scottish Premiership debut for St Mirren FC
Published: August 04, 2024Former Southampton youth teamer Roland Idowu scored on his Scottish Premiership debut for St Mirren FC as they defeated Hibernian 3-0 on the opening day of the season on Sunday afternoon.
The former Republic of Ireland underage international joined St Mirren in June 2024, on a season-long loan from English League One side Shrewsbury Town.
Prior to his Scottish Premiership debut at the SMISA Stadium in Paisley, the attacking midfielder had played in two games for St Mirren in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
After a goalless first half, Idowu scored a beauty to break the deadlock, sprinting down the left side before unleashing a powerful shot that sailed into the far corner of the net in the 48th minute.
In the 75th minute, the Irish-Nigerian came close to scoring his second cracker of the game as his curling effort came off the post.
St Mirren doubled the advantage three minutes later through Oisin Smyth who headed home after former Flying Eagles defender Marvin Ekpiteta's pass back was intercepted by James Scott.
Smyth and Scott combined again to increase the lead, with the former turning home a cross for 3-0.
Another summer signing of Nigerian descent Dennis Adeniran also made his full Premiership debut for St Mirren.
Thanks to their big win over Hibernian, St Mirren are first in the provisional Premiership table
