No going back: Celtic's Super Eagles-eligible defender agrees move to Stoke City
Published: August 11, 2024The transfer of Celtic's Super Eagles-eligible central defender Bosun Lawal to Championship outfit Stoke City is imminent.
The Potters and Celtic have reached a club-to-club agreement for the transfer of the Republic of Ireland U21 international, paving the way for him to travel to England to undergo a medical ahead of a potential unveiling this week.
According to pictures circulating on social media, the versatile center half has already landed in England and watched Stoke City begin the new season with a 1-0 win over Coventry City in the Championship on Saturday.
Celtic have agreed to end their three-year association with the Irish-Nigerian youngster in exchange for a fee of three million pounds.
Lawal trained with the first team of the Hoops during pre-season preparations, featuring in friendly matches against Ayr United, Queen's Park and Chelsea.
He was not considered for Celtic's Scottish Premiership opener with Kilmarnock, which indicated that he was not in the plans of manager Brendan Rodgers for the 2024-2025 season.
Lawal is set to return to the English Football League, after spending the entirety of last season on loan at Fleetwood Town, where he caught the eye by mustering six goals and producing two assists in 42 appearances in the third tier.
The 21-year-old is departing the Scottish champions after only one senior game which came in a Scottish FA Cup clash against Greenock Morton FC on January 21, 2023.
Lawal played for Watford's youth teams before he was snapped up by Celtic three years ago.
