Confirmed: Stoke City sign versatile Nigerian central defender from Celtic despite injury
Published: August 12, 2024Through a statement on their official website, Championship outfit Stoke City have announced the signing of Irish-born Nigerian central defender Bosun Lawal from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.
The Potters have pulled off a transfer coup luring the Republic of Ireland U21 international to the bet365 Stadium, beating other English Football League clubs to his signature.
Although the transfer fee has not been disclosed as per club policy, Stoke City confirmed that Lawal put pen to paper on a four year deal until June 30, 2028.
Stoke City confirmed that Lawal is not immediately available for selection due to a short-term injury he is recuperating from.
The Potters have recruited a player who offers versatility as he is comfortable playing as a centre-back and defensive midfielder.
He has returned to the Football League after spending the entirety of last season on loan at Fleetwood Town, where he made 46 appearances in all competitions and scored six goals.
Lawal was spotted watching Stoke City's opening day win versus Coventry City this past weekend, fueling speculation that his departure from Celtic was imminent.
The 21-year-old has departed the Hoops for pastures new due a lack of first team opportunities having logged three minutes in his three-year association with the club.
Lawal admitted that his conversations with Glenn Whelan and Charlie Adam influenced his decision to choose Stoke City over his other suitors.
