Habeeb Ogunneye: 18yo Nigerian right-back named in Man Utd's travelling squad to face Fenerbahce
Published: October 23, 2024Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will include talented right-back of Nigerian descent, Habeeb Ogunneye in his gameday squad on Thursday evening when his side do battle with Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in a Europa League encounter at Ülker Stadyumu Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Spor Kompleksi in İstanbul, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
According to Manchester United's official website, Ogunneye joins Ethan Wheatley and Harry Amass as the three teenagers in the team heading to Istanbul.
An England youth international, Ogunneye was spotted training with Manchester United's first teamers at Carrington Training Ground on Tuesday, suggesting he was being considered for the squad traveling to Turkey.
With Europe's football governing body, UEFA allowing clubs to name twenty-three players in the matchday squad, it is a foregone conclusion that Ogunneye will be named in the team to face Fenerbahce.
The 18-year-old dual-national defender will be eager to make his senior debut for the Red Devils after he was a non-playing substitute in nine matches across all competitions last season.
Ogunneye trained with the Red Devils in the early part of pre-season preparations, featuring in friendly matches against Rosenborg and Rangers.
No player of Nigerian descent has managed to make his debut for Manchester United in European competition since Shola Shoretire in February 2021.
Ogunneye signed his first professional contract with Manchester United in November 2022.
